SrI Thirumazhisai Piran’s Thirucchandaviruttam

Dear Devotees and Friends:

The current Tamizh Month is “Thai” (Makara MAsam). The star “Magham” in this month is the most auspicious Thirunakshatram of Sri Thirumazhisai Piran. It falls on Saturday the 27 th of January, 2024 in Toronto. We will have special Thirumanjanam of the Azhwar along with our Moolavar Perumal in our Richmond Hill Hindu Temple, Toronto and recite Thirucchanda viruttam with Satrumurai. Adiyen had the bhAgyam of translating this beautiful prabhandham as per the great Acharya Sri Periya VAcchAn pillai’s “vyAkhyanam”(commentary) with the help of the “vivaranam” (explanatory notes)  of Puthur Swami Sri Krishna Swamy Iyengar, a well known erudite Sri Vaishnava Scholar. The first edition of that book was published in the year 2003 and has also been housed in our web site azhwar.org. A second edition with Unicode fonts and Tamizh texts in readable English format became necessary when Swami Sri Sadagopan Iyengar, the editor of the monthly Journal Vainavan Kural (VK) wanted to publish this translation serially in their monthly VK publications. Adiyèn completed that second edition by the grace of Azhwar and made it available for them. The serial monthly publications in VK was started in January, 2021 and in about 33 issues of the VK, had published all of the 120 verses from this beautiful Prabhandham.  They added in addition attractive drawings in appropriate places to illustrate the “leeas” of the Lord. The most recent issue is actually from the current month of January,2024.

Adiyen wish to share the E-text of this second edition of the Thirucchanda viruttam -Text with Translation in our azhwar.org web site in connection with the auspicious thirunakshatram of Sri Thirumazhisai Piran. Believe it would be of value to those who have difficulty in reading Tamizh texts. The link is given below to the E-text.

May the infinite grace of Sri Thirumazhisai Piran and Sri PeriaVacchan pillai be with all of us.

With sincere thanks and regards

Adiyen Ranganathan

SrI: dévi , BhU dévi and NIlA dévi , Tatvam and Takavu,

SrI:

Dear Devotees and friends:

Trust that this finds you all well. Early on during the Covid lock down here in Toronto, there was an email from (our son) Shyam. It simply read, “how about Sri, BhU and Nila”.  (Shyam teaches both Eastern and Western Philosophy). Adiyén took that to mean that he wished to know the sampradAyic (traditional) perspectives on this topic about the Divine Mothers in Sri Vaishnavism.   Actually pondered over this almost two months.  Adiyén began to sit down and formulate what my approach to the subject should be, by about the beginning of July. I wanted very much to finish writing the same before ThiruvAdi Pooram. Although I could not finish by that date, I did manage to finish writing the same before the end of the Tamil month of Adi with the grace of our ThAyArs.  The article is entitled “SrI Dévi, BhU Dévi and NIlA Dévi, Tatvam and Takavu“. Actually placed the same under the divine feet of our Perumal on Saturday the 15th of Aug, 2020.  All the quotes in this article are translated. In many places the Sanskrit and Tamil verses are also provided in Roman script also. Adiyen is delighted to mention, that the article was very much liked by SrimAn (dr) Sadagopan SwAmi who is a well known Sri Vaishnava scholar.  His famous web site (sadagopan.org) is a treasure house of many beautiful texts from our tradition with translations and commentaries.

Adiyén’s older brother SrI. N.Rajagopalan provided a short review of the key differences in the theologic perspectives between the two schools of SrI Vaishnavism based on the works of SrI SwAmi Désikan and Sri Pillai LokAchAryAr. This review entitled, “Ontological Status and Role of SrI: – Some Theological Perspectives” is appended at the end of adiyén’s article.

We are pleased to upload and release this manuscript through our web site azhwar.org to co-inside with the  the annual BrahmOtsavam of our SrI Vénkatéshwara Perumal at the Richmond Hill Hindu Temple in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This BrahmOtsavam is usually held over 10 days in the Tamil month of Avani beginning on the nakshatram of avittam and ending on Rohini, thirunakshatram of SrI Krishna.  This year it began on the 1 st of Sept, 2020.

SrI:

Dear Devotees and Friends:

We are very pleased indeed to be able to release the E-book on SrI Kulashékara Azhwar’s prabhandham, “Perumal Thirumozhi”. It is a new publication by Dr. Suganya Anandakichenin of Hamburg University. It happens to be her PhD thesis. The book is entitled, “My Sapphire-hued Lord, My Beloved. A Complete, Annotated Translation of Kulacekara Alvar’s Perumal Tirumoli and Periyavaccan Pillai’s Medieval Manipravalam Commentary, with an Introduction“.

SrImAn Sadagopan Swami introduced us to her very interesting work on SrI Kulashékara Azhwar’s  Perumal Thirumozhi. SrImathi Suganya has kindly allowed us to share her beautiful E-book through our web site Azhwar.org. AdiyEn’s older brother SrI N.Rajagopalan expressed these words about this publication, “It is a very valuable addition to Sampradaya works in English. It is a prodigious effort by the young lady and deserves all praise”.

It is a unique and thorough study of this Azhwar and his work. It will be of immense interest to all SrI Vaishnavas. It is a privilege and honor to have it available through our web site, thanks to the author SrImathi (Dr) Suganya Anandakichenin. The link is given below.

Alvars and their celestial songs – Some Glimpses by Sri N.Rajagopalan_ 24_06_2015

Dear Devotees and Friends:

It is with great pleasure, adiyen wish to upload the book written by Sri N. Rajagopalan (adiyen’s older brother), published in 2015, to our web site under the category of “Life Stories”. This book has thoughtful and succinct account of each of the azhwar’s works and their philosophic import. It provides many interesting details about the life stories of the Azhwars. In addition, the details of the divya desa anubhavam (experience of the Lord enshrined in Sri Vaishnava holy shrines) of the Azhwars reflected in their divine verses are refreshing and enjoyable.

Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha KarAvalambha StOtram

Dear devotees and friends: Re: Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha KarAvalambha StOtram.

Recently I was fortunate enough to come across a nice translation of the verses of Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha KarAvalambham into Tamil. They were being kindly forwarded to me by Sri Jagdishan, one of my close friends and former colleague during my college days in Loyola College in Chennai. Through his help, I was able to correspond with the author of these translations, Smt. Nirmala Subramanian.  She has been kind enough to provide a  thoughtful and nice easy flowing translation of these beautiful verses in Tamil and has allowed us to share the same through this web site. I wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to her for providing the same and sharing the same with all of us through this web site.

This is the Tamil month of Adi. Last week we celebrated ThiruvAdi Pooram, the Thirunakshatram of Sri Andal. It is therefore befitting to upload the meaning of Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha KarAvalambha StOtram in conjunction with this auspicious occasion.

Image Gallery

In this section we are will have images of the holy shrines connected with Azhwars’ birth places as well as the images of the various Azhwars and the celebrations of their thirunakshatrams. It is a pleasure therefore to bring to all the bhagavathas some of the pictures taken at Thirumazhisai including the ones taken during the recent Thirunakshtram celebration of Sri Thirumazhisai Piran, which took place on the 25th of Jan.2008. Thirumazhisai is the first village situated on the road to Tiruppathi from Chennai. It is quite close to Poovirundhavalli also known as “Poondamalli”. In the beautiful and holy shrine here , Azhwar’s  sanctum is on one side and the sanctum of Sri Jagannatha Perumal is directly next to it at right angles.  The Azhwars’ thirunakshatram is celebrated with great enthusiasm and festivities for 10 days finishing on the Thai Magham, which is the asterism of Sri ThirumazhisaiPiran. On that day, there is a special Thirumanjanam of Azhwar (Moolavar) followed by Kaitthala SEvai of Sri Jagannatha Perumal who honours the Azhwar. After this,  there is usually  Parayanam (recitation) of Nanmukan Thiruvandhadhi  and Saturmurai. After this, Azhwar (utsavar) is taken in procession around the temple and then to his Avatharasthalam where he stays for the rest of the day in a mandapam giving darsanam to all devotees.  The Purappadu (Procession) utsavam is colourful, beautiful, marked by Oonjal SEvai and Oyyali Nadai SEvai.

In the evening, Thirucchanda viruttam Satrumurai takes place at the avatharasthalam. Later Azhwar (Utsavar) has  a  Thirumanjanam and alankaram followed by Veethi (outside) Purappadu and returns to the temple in the night. Being there in person of course for the entire day is a delightful experience and enjoyed by all devotees. Next morning there usually is Thiruvaimozhi Satrumurai which is very sublime with honours bestowed on the Azhwar from the LOrd from various divya kshetras including Srivilliputtur, Thiruvallikeni, Thiruppathi, Thiruvekkha, Mailai, Srirangam and others.  For those of us who couldn’t get to go and enjoy the celebrations in person,  these images will give us some glimpse of how beautiful it must have been.

Stotras

Although this site will have Azhwars’ Pasurams, I would like to provide links to three stotras that I had recorded previously. They were originally presented to Perumal in our temple in Toronto.  We still sing Sri Ranganathashtakam of Sri Adhi Sankara and recite the Sudarshanashtakam of Swami Desikan routinely on Saturdays after Thirumanjanam of Perumal after reciting the Sahasranamams and Sri Lakshmi Ashtotram. The other Stotram is Sri Lakshmi Nrsimha Karavalambha Stotram of Sri Adhi Sankara.  May the Lord Sri Lakshmi Nrsimha’s grace be with us always.
